Many Everton fans are drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern after a testing return to Premier League action for Ronald Koeman’s side at the weekend.
The Toffees were comfortably beaten 3-0 at home by Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham on Saturday to inflict a second successive defeat on Koeman’s men, leaving them with just four points from their opening four league games.
And those supporters lining the bar are unlikely to be cheered up too much by a recent report from Sunday’s print edition (page 58) of The Sun on Sunday (via HITC), as they have reported that winger Aaron Lennon could be on his way out of Goodison Park in January.
The 30-year-old moved to Everton back in 2015 following a decent loan spell there earlier that year, and has since gone on to appear 37 times in the Premier League for the Toffees since making that move permanent two years ago.
However, the former England international has played just seven minutes of top-flight action this term and has failed to make Koeman’s matchday squad in three of their four matches, and reports suggest that Burnley are seeking to take advantage of his restricted gametime by launching a move in January.
The Clarets reportedly attempted a move for Lennon over the summer but no deal materialised, yet a continued lack of first team football for the 30-year-old could see the Everton faithful saying goodbye to the winger come the New Year.
Landlord’s verdict: Aaron Lennon has played just seven minutes of Premier League action this season, and following a summer of big spending at Goodison Park, he’s unlikely to command a regular spot in Ronald Koeman’s Everton team.
Thus, it was somewhat surprising to see the 30-year-old remain at the club beyond the summer deadline, especially if reports are true of a Burnley approach, and with the Clarets reportedly set to reignite their interest in the winger in January, his time at Goodison Park could be coming to an end.
