Liverpool have been a force of nature so far this season. The Reds have taken 12 points from their first four games and they’ve looked unbeatable at times. Even against Leicester on Saturday they managed to win despite being well below par, and that’s partly down to the incredible form of Joe Gomez at centre-back.

It’s easy to look at what Liverpool spent on Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker and assume that the pair have been the sole reason why Jurgen Klopp’s defence has looked much better, however, when watching Liverpool in action you can see that if it wasn’t for the incredible form of Joe Gomez then they wouldn’t be where they are at the moment. The youngster has slotted back into the side alongside van Dijk with ease and long may it continue.
It would be hard for any 21-year-old defender to look comfortable at the heart of Liverpool’s defence. However, to do so after missing out on over a year’s action having suffered two major injuries after being signed to play as a full-back is truly an impressive achievement. It’s a testament to the young defender’s performances that Gareth Southgate has called him up to the England squad and if he keeps performing the way he does then it’s hard to see anyone edging out the Kopites over 90 minutes this season.
