Jurgen Klopp’s side have yet to resolve the defensive issues that have plagued them in recent seasons and prevented them from competing for the Premier League title. The signing of Joel Matip on a free transfer in June 2016 was a shrewd piece of business that Liverpool have failed to build upon in the following transfer windows.
There is still plenty to do at the club with regards to correcting defensive frailties and establishing effective working partnerships across the back-line.
With that being said, the hierarchy at Liverpool should be making it their number one priority to establish potential defensive targets to sign in the January window.
And it appears work is well underway at the club in that regard…
The Liverpool fans propping up the bar in the tavern are intrigued by reports emerging in The Daily Mail linking their club with a move for Sevilla’s highly sought-after defender Clement Lenglet.
22-year-old Clement has been ever-present at the heart of Sevilla’s defence so far this season, and his performances have reportedly attracted interest from a handful of Europe’s heavyweight clubs.
But Clement is yet to be capped by the French national side, and Liverpool should be ideally be focusing on the acquisition of more experienced talent to rectify their defensive problems.
Although there is no doubting that Clement has the potential to succeed in the Premier League, he should bide his time before making a move away from Sevilla.
In the best interests of the club and Clement’s development, Klopp should turn his attention to defenders who have established themselves at the highest-level of the game in the January window.
