Tottenham Hotspur: Fans react to latest transfer news as Dayot Upamecano linked with move

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho is keeping tabs on RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano in the summer transfer window, according to a report from The Mirror.

The Portuguese boss was pictured watching Leipzig’s recent game against Bayern Munich, with most assuming that he was scouting them ahead of their Champions League last 16 clash. However, it is suggested that he was also taking a look at the French defender who is thought to have a £50m release clause in his current contract.

Spurs are likely to be in the market for a new centre-back this summer with Jan Vertonghen’s contract set to expire, leaving them with only Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and youngster Japhet Tanganga in that position.

The 21-year-old is one of Europe’s most highly-rated centre-backs and he has been a regular for the German outfit this season, starting in 17 of their 21 Bundesliga matches and five out of six Champions League outings (Transfermarkt). His statistics for the current campaign are certainly impressive – on average, he wins 73% of his aerial duels per match, whilst also averaging 3.4 clearances, 2.4 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game (SofaScore).

However, it seems that plenty of Spurs fans wouldn’t be too keen on signing the young central defender, with some pointing to his history of knee injuries (Transfermarkt) as a reason not to bring him in. Meanwhile, a couple of others simply don’t rate him, with one even describing him as a “BTEC Tanganga.”
