When the final whistle blew at Fratton Park, Portsmouth fans knew this could be the last time they see some of their star players in the blue and white.
Crashing out to Sunderland in the League One play-off semi-finals was not how Pompey fans expected their season to end, but a 1-0 aggregate loss saw their hopes of a return to the Championship fade right before their eyes, and a looming thought that had been stored in the back of the head of every Portsmouth supporter was brought forward.
With the summer transfer window now open for business, many of Portsmouth’s star names will likely be at the centre of interest from clubs with deep pockets looking to pluck a bargain from League One, and one player who is already attracting interest is Jamal Lowe.
The 25-year-old attacker has been one of the most prolific players in League One this season, scoring 15 goals and assisting eight in the division, and with 12 months left on his current deal, it is no surprise to see Lowe at the centre of interest from teams in the Championship.
Leeds United and Cardiff City are both (per Sky Sports) reportedly interested in the winger, and if a bid is to come in for the attacker this summer, Portsmouth would be wise to allow their star forward leave this summer.
As well as the financial benefits, Lowe is a player who is more than ready for the leap up into the Championship. The winger has made League One look easy this season and was one of the driving forces behind Portsmouth’s surge for promotion, and after such an impressive campaign, the 25-year-old deserves this chance to play football at a higher.
Portsmouth will likely be one of the favourites for promotion next season, but that doesn’t guarantee anything for the south coast club, and if two prestigious teams like Leeds and Cardiff are sniffing around for Lowe, the winger needs to take the risk and seek a move to either one of these teams.
Lowe has proven to be a brilliant servant for Portsmouth in the past two seasons, and the winger has earned his right to play a step above League One which he can obtain this summer.
Portsmouth fans, should Lowe move on this summer? Let us know!
