Paul Robinson has tipped Leeds United to be in the race to sign Ben White from Brighton this summer.
Bielsa will eye White
White spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Elland Road, playing in all 46 matches in the Championship as Marcelo Bielsa’s side were promoted to the Premier League (Transfermarkt).
There was interest from the Whites in making that deal permanent during the summer transfer window, but parent club Brighton refused to do business, with the defender now becoming a permanent fixture in Graham Potter’s side – he’s played every single top-flight game this season bar one.
Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson believes Leeds will be one of three sides to pursue the 23-year-old in the summer. He said:
“A lot of clubs will be looking to sign an elite level centre-back in the summer.
“I expect Ben White to be in demand from Leeds, Liverpool and Tottenham at the end of the season.
“You can see how hard that market when you look at Liverpool’s business in January. They waited until the end of the window and they got two players who they probably did not initially want to sign.
“If you are a top-class centre-half in this day and age, you are in high-demand.”
Brighton will not let White leave the club without a fight. He has started all but one of the Seagulls’ 24 matches in the Premier League this campaign, and although they currently lie 15th in the table, they actually have the joint-10th best defence in the top flight (Sky Sports).
Would you like to re-sign White?
Currently valued at £19.8m (Transfermarkt), a three-way transfer battle will play right into Brighton’s hands – they will likely be able to demand a higher fee for his services. Bielsa and co, though, know White particularly well, and he may feel more comfortable with a move back to Yorkshire. It remains to be seen whether Leeds can prevail.
