Southampton supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are still in jubilant mood after they reached the League Cup final by beating Liverpool over two legs, and focus will now turn to the conclusion of the January transfer window next week.

With Jose Fonte departing for West Ham and Virgil van Dijk picking up an injury in the 3-0 win against Leicester at the weekend, the Saints fans standing at the bar will be hoping to see a new centre-back come into the club by Tuesday, although the impressive performance by young Jack Stephens at Anfield on Wednesday night may mean they wait until the summer.

Another one of their problems has been their lack of goals, and while a defender and an attacker could arrive at St Mary’s, the supporters in the tavern will also be speculating about some players that could leave in the coming days, and maybe some that they really should have been let go already – there are certainly a few individuals the landlord isn’t too keen on.

Here are THREE players Southampton really should have sold by now…

Cuco Martina

But for a season-ending injury to Jeremy Pied in August, it is likely that Martina would have been allowed to link up with Ronald Koeman again at Everton at the end of the summer transfer window – not too many Saints fans in the tavern would have shed a tear at his departure.

However, Southampton couldn’t afford to sell the defender then and with their first-choice right-back Cedric Soares also missing chunks of the campaign because of injury – and with the increased number of fixtures with the Europa League group stages – he has been a useful member of the squad – the landlord will always remember that goal against Arsenal.

But Martina has still failed to impress many of the Saints fans standing at the bar since he joined the club in 2015, and with Cedric, Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens all able to play on the right side of a back four, his time at St Mary’s could soon be up.

Paulo Gazzaniga

When Southampton signed the young goalkeeper from Gillingham in 2012, hopes would have been high that he would go on to great things with the Premier League outfit.

However, it hasn’t quite turned out that way for the Argentinean stopper, who has played second fiddle to the likes of Kelvin Davis, Maarten Stekelenburg and Fraser Forster during his Saints career – the Saints fans that frequent the tavern certainly haven’t been impressed with him.

Looking nervous every time he is given an opportunity – he has made 23 appearances in total – the 25-year-old was sent out on loan to Spanish second division outfit Rayo Vallecano this season.

With little hope of a future at St Mary’s, perhaps the club should have looked to sell him on a permanent basis last summer, and it is something that could come to fruition at the end of the current campaign – the landlord thinks it would be the best option for both parties.

Lloyd Isgrove

Following a successful loan spell with League One side Barnsley last season – including scoring a goal in the play-off final win against Millwall – Isgrove would have hoped to return to parent club Southampton and make a real impression this term – the Saints fans standing at the bar are always excited to see a young player thrive.

It hasn’t really happened for the Welshman though and he has made just one first team appearance against Sunderland in the League Cup, and he obviously did little to impress manager Claude Puel as he hasn’t featured since – much to the disappointment of the landlord.

In fact, the likes of Jake Hesketh and Josh Sims have featured more than the 24-year-old forward and his future at St Mary’s is certainly in doubt – a permanent move to the Championship could be the best option for both parties.
