The January transfer window is important for any team, but this year we’d say it’s going to be the making or breaking of Tottenham’s season.
They’ve done extremely well up to now despite not making a single deal over the summer, sitting in 4th place – a record which is probably a testament to Pochettino’s ability than Daniel Levy’s frugal business approach.
However, it would be dangerous and naive to pass the January checkpoint without recruiting effectively. They’re an injury or two away from catastrophe in some positions, and their weak efforts in Europe show just how harshly the fixture list can catch up on a thin squad.
With that in mind, here are two players Levy should sign this January…
Sander Berge

Bleacher Report claim that Tottenham are one of the front-runners for the talented £15-million rated Genk midfielder.
Midfield is probably one of the most pressing positions for Spurs to cover with Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele’s exit surely impending, and Moussa Sissoko being the only real likewise option.
The big Norwegian would certainly fill the physical void left by Wanyama, and provide the defensive cover too.
His quality in the holding midfield role isn’t entirely dependent on his physique though. Berge is also a very capable footballer, with a relaxed approach on the ball and excellent technical ability that allows him to easily distribute the ball away from danger. He’s even quite handy at dribbling past players, much like Dembele.
Declan Rice
Declan Rice is a name that fails to go away.
His performances this season have completely outshone those of the rest of his West Ham teammates, apart from perhaps Marko Arnautovic, and he’s quickly making a name for himself as one of the brightest young talents in the league. Yet his club are unwilling to meet his demands for a new contract.
Naturally, with such a strong player on offer a number of big teams, including Chelsea and Manchester United, have been circling in an attempt to secure his signature. Tottenham are no different. According to The Sun, Mauricio Pochettino is interested in bringing the player to Spurs to replace outbound Wanyama and Dembele and provide cover in the centre of defence.
Rice would certainly be a quality acquisition.
