Liverpool to compete for £82m star Messi dubbed “extraordinary”

Liverpool’s transfer business dominated the headlines this summer, with the Premier League champions adding major talent to their already impressive squad.

Arne Slot guided the Reds to the league title in his debut season and was rewarded with significant reinvestment ahead of the current campaign.

Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz have all joined Liverpool with a view to becoming the next generation of success at Anfield.

Jürgen Klopp completely transformed Liverpool’s fortunes during his nine-year tenure on Merseyside.

Although his departure disappointed supporters, the hierarchy has shown full commitment to backing his successor and strengthening the squad to compete on all fronts.

Liverpool already sit five points clear at the top of the Premier League after winning their first five fixtures, but expectations extend to securing more silverware in both domestic cups and the Champions League.

The arrivals of Isak and Ekitike have added firepower to the forward line following the departures of Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz, as well as the tragic loss of Diogo Jota.

Both newcomers carry high expectations, particularly with Isak costing £125m, and will be tasked with delivering alongside Mohamed Salah this season.

However, reports suggest Liverpool are not finished building their attack for the future, with Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez once again linked with a move to Merseyside.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Liverpool plan to rival Barcelona for Álvarez next summer.

The report describes him as a versatile forward suited to their system, capable of playing centrally or out wide.

Liverpool are said to be preparing an aggressive strategy, though they face strong competition from Barcelona, who view him as Robert Lewandowski’s long-term successor.

Ultimately, the decision may rest with Álvarez himself, with both clubs monitoring how Atlético’s season unfolds. Barcelona are already exploring what would be required to strike a deal.

Would Álvarez be the right fit for Liverpool?

There is little doubt that the signing of Alvarez would be welcomed at Anfield.

Many supporters will remember his role in Manchester City’s treble-winning campaign, where he established himself in Premier League football with versatility and consistent output – scoring 36 goals and providing 19 assists in 103 appearances.

Liverpool already boast strong competition in the centre-forward role, but Álvarez’s ability to operate on either wing makes him an ideal candidate to succeed Salah as the Egyptian approaches the latter stages of his career.

The World Cup winner – hailed as “extraordinary” by Argentina teammate Lionel Messi – developed a strong partnership with Erling Haaland at City, offering creativity, selfless link-up play and his own goalscoring threat.

For Liverpool, pursuing Álvarez next summer looks an obvious move as they prepare for life after Salah.

Signed by Atlético for £82m in 2023, the 25-year-old is said to have a release clause of £437m (€500m), though it remains uncertain what fee the Spanish club would realistically demand to let him go.

Liverpool comfortably flexed their financial power over the summer, and if they are genuinely interested in capturing Alvarez, they will likely need to commit to another huge spend to secure his services next summer.
