Liverpool and Man City willing to pay £25m for Premier League star

Recovering from the dismal defeat against Bournemouth still, the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been drowning their sorrows.

Such is the fragile nature of their defence, the Reds propping up the bar have seen their hopes of winning a first Premier League title dashed as they query the backline.

So, imagine just how reports from De Telegraaf have gone down this afternoon.

They claim Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has a £25m release clause in his deal on the south coast and that the Kop titans are ready to pay it.

The presence of that apparent clause in his deal has also been reported elsewhere, though the Reds are not the only team thought to be interested in the Dutchman.

Widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, the likes of Everton and Manchester City are also said to be willing to put money on the table.

While the sudden influx of funds into the Premier League affords even teams like Southampton huge spending power, a move to one of the aforementioned sides would surely see a huge increase in the 25-year-old’s wages too.

Both City and Liverpool particularly have struggled in defensive areas and the former Celtic man could be a welcome tonic, much to the delight of those from the north-west propping up the bar.
