Liverpool face competition for the signing of £100m “world-beater”

Liverpool face competition for the signing of £100m “world-beater”

Liverpool dominated the headlines in the summer transfer window after spending around £450m, and it looks like they are not done bringing in world-class talent.

The Reds secured the signatures of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, adding crucial depth after offloading some of their key players.

Luis Díaz, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Darwin Núñez were the most notable departures over the summer, while the tragic loss of Diogo Jota left a huge hole in both the attacking threat and the heart of the team.

Arne Slot will have mixed emotions about his squad’s start to the campaign.

Although they are currently two points clear at the top of the table, the performances have not been as comfortable or confident as last season.

This is perhaps to be expected with so many new players joining the fold, but there will still be high expectations from supporters to push on and earn more silverware after becoming Premier League champions.

Manchester City’s dominance over the last decade has always been Liverpool’s biggest obstacle, but it is now clear that the club’s hierarchy is dedicated to building a world-class squad capable of consistently competing for the biggest honours.

It was widely reported throughout the summer that Liverpool were interested in signing Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba.

Now, TEAMtalk are reporting that the Premier League champions remain keen on the player, but will face competition from their fiercest rivals, Manchester United.

The publication claims that the Red Devils are determined to sign the midfielder next summer, though they have concerns about his hefty price tag.

It is believed that Brighton are unwilling to part with their player for less than £100m, which would represent a major investment in his potential.

United did make contact in the summer, but Brighton refused to negotiate on their asking price.

Liverpool are expected to provide strong competition for Baleba, sparking yet another transfer battle between the two giants.

Will Liverpool sign Carlos Baleba?

There is no doubt that Baleba is one of the most exciting midfield talents in the top flight at present, but with a £100m price tag he represents a huge financial commitment.

Liverpool already boast a wealth of quality in midfield, with World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister, Florian Wirtz, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Curtis Jones all vying for places.

The Brighton star – once hailed as a “world-beater” by teammate Danny Welbeck – plays primarily as a defensive midfielder, he would provide competition for Gravenberch in that role and could be seen as a successor to Endo.

A move for Baleba would likely depend on how the current campaign unfolds and whether Gravenberch can maintain his high level.

However, spending £100m on direct competition for the Dutchman seems unlikely, despite a similar situation with Ekitike and Isak in the striker role.

Manchester United, on the other hand, could offer Baleba a more guaranteed role in their midfield.

He would be a natural successor to Casemiro and could significantly strengthen their defensive efforts, something that is desperately needed in their pursuit to compete at the very top again.

With that being said, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool or Manchester United will commit to Brighton’s fee or attempt to negotiate a deal next summer.
