Liverpool: Fans are delighted over Gini Wijnaldum contract update

Georginio Wijnaldum looks set to pen a new deal with Liverpool, as indicated by recent reports.

According to Fabrizio Romano (relayed via @LFCTransferRoom), ‘positive talks’ have been held between the club and the midfielder, with a new three-year deal on the table. However, before Wijnaldum commits his future, he is reportedly looking for assurances that he will remain a key player in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Dutchman has been a prominent figure in Liverpool’s squad ever since he first joined back in 2016. The Reds paid a fee of £25m to coax him away from Newcastle (via BBC Sport). Since his arrival, Wijnaldum has played 177 matches, scoring 18 goals and assisting 16 in that time (via Transfermarkt).

If the proposed new contract talks come to fruition, the 29-year-old will remain at the club until 2023, which is a welcome thought for Liverpool fans, many of whom have flocked to Twitter to share their excitement. One supporter has tweeted that ‘Gini is elite’ whilst another sees the new contract as a no-brainer because ‘Klopp loves him’.
