Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been laughing at the news that Mauricio Pellegrino has been sacked by Southampton as the club sit dangerously close to the drop zone. The Argentine, who had ties to Liverpool as a player and a coach under Rafa Benitez, left the club after a 3-0 defeat against Newcastle at the hands of his former boss and mentor, Benitez.
The Kopites who have been propping our bar up aren’t too upset to see Pellegrino get the sack and have taken joy at the fact that not only did Klopp mastermind two wins against the Saints, but they also signed their star payer, Virgil Van Dijk, back in January. Pellegrino’s sacking leaves the south coast club in a very dangerous position as they need to appoint the right man quickly if they’re to steer themselves clear of relegation.
Pellegrino turned out for Liverpool in the 2004/05 season, making 13 appearances as a centre-half under Benitez but couldn’t convince the Spaniard to sign him on an extended contract. Then after retiring, the Argentine returned to Anfield as a part of Rafa Benitez’s coaching staff in 2008, where he remained until 2010 when he moved to Inter Milan with Benitez.
Indeed, both Southampton and Liverpool have been close in recent years, with the latter often stealing the former’s best players, so there’s certainly a bit of bad blood between the sides.
With that in mind, you can see our resident Reds’ verdict on Pellegrino here:
Southampton have sacked Pellegrino, I’m sure we could find a job for him at anfield, maybe cleaning the boots of ex Southampton players. #saintsfc #LFC

Pellegrino sacked, not a great day for ex-Liverpool centre-halfs. What next? Lawrenson arrested for shoplifting in Matalan?? #lfc

Agent #Pellegrino's job is done. Gain management, sell prized asset then leave having steered #saints towards relegation. More players for #LFC now. #Southampton pic.twitter.com/U1am5jxLJi

Special Agent Pellegrino did a great job pushing Southampton close to relegation so #lfc transfer dealings will be cheaper in the summer @empireofthekop pic.twitter.com/s2mWMzJ5Sd
