Liverpool could have another Dutch international in their midfield alongside Georginio Wijnaldum this season if one potential transfer story had worked out differently.
Italian outlet FC Inter News reported that the Reds had been considering signing Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek during the summer, but were put off by the Eredivisie club’s €80m (£69.5m) valuation of the 22-year-old.

Van de Beek, who played in every match for Ajax on their run to the Champions League semi-finals last season, has scored three goals in his first 12 games of the current campaign and is now valued at £100m by the club, according to Anfield Watch.
His ratio of one goal every four matches is matched by Marko Grujic, the midfielder on loan from Liverpool to Hertha Berlin who has netted twice in eight games for the Bundesliga outfit so far this term.
These Liverpool fans on Twitter did not seem too disappointed that the club opted against meeting Ajax’s valuation for Van de Beek over the summer:
