Lots of Liverpool fans have been reacting to their 5-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Tuesday night, as Neil Critchley’s youngsters were soundly beaten in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.
With Jurgen Klopp and the first-team watching on from Doha as they prepare for the Club World Cup, the young Reds were given a harsh footballing lesson by an experienced Aston Villa side.
Indeed, while Critchley’s youngsters actually looked like the better side in some spells of the game and were unfortunate not to score a couple of first-half goals, Dean Smith’s team went into the half-time break with a 4-0 lead, showing the youngsters exactly how cruel first-team football can be.
Jonathan Kodjia was the star of the show in the first half, but one of his goals came from a mistake by Reds centre-back van den Berg, and plenty of fans are criticising the Dutchman’s display.
Signed from PEC Zwolle this summer for just £1.3m, the 17 year-old has not impressed in any of his three senior appearances so far, and he scored just 6.3 out of 10 on Sofascore on Tuesday night, looking slow and weak against the Villans.

He’s too slow for this level.

He’ll never play for us, in the Prem at least. I’d bet my house on it

He’s young, yes… but he’s tragic on the first half, two goals concended because of him… Chirivella and Kane two maybe the oldest players should defend more on defence and also opening spaces for others.

Van Den Berg has to be one of the most shocking signings we’ve ever made. Been horrendous for the U-23’s, horrendous in the cup games too.
