Anfield icon Steve Nicol has given his opinion on who he feels should partner Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool’s defence.
He hasn’t tipped it to be a current player on Jurgen Klopp’s roster, though. Instead, Nicol would like to see his former side swoop for major money target Kalidou Koulibaly.

Speaking to ESPN (relayed via @AnfieldEdition), the Scot said: “If I had a wish list then I would wish that Koulibaly would be sat next to Virgil van Dijk.”
The Senegalese centre-half has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time, with the club even submitting an official £54m bid for his services. However, Napoli rejected the offer and value him at a much higher price of £90m (via The Express).
Joe Gomez has become a solid partner for van Dijk, with the two working well to help keep 13 clean sheets in the Premier League last season (via Transfermarkt).

However, despite Liverpool’s recent interest in Koulibaly, many fans disagree with Nicol’s call. One supporter has said they would ‘rather have Gomez’ as they clearly value the 23-year-old more and don’t want to see the club splurge on a man linked with Manchester City.
