Loads of Liverpool fans are gushing over the performance of Jordan Henderson in Tuesday night’s win over Red Bull Salzburg, with one supporter even suggesting he played like a prime Javier Mascherano.
After emerging as a more attacking player in the latter half of last season, Liverpool’s skipper has had to change positions once again in the new campaign.
Fabinho’s ankle injury has forced the former Sunderland man into the defensive role in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield three, and he has taken to it like a duck to water.
Indeed, after impressing fans in the 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday, the England international was superb again on Tuesday as the Reds won in Austria.
Per Sofascore, Henderson made two tackles and two interceptions, as well as completing 84% of his passes and creating two chances, one of which led to Mohamed Salah’s exquisite goal.
The stats don’t really do his all-action performance justice though, as Virgil van Dijk explained to The Athletic: “The contribution he makes goes unnoticed sometimes.
“I don’t know if he’s under-appreciated outside the club, but inside the club I know how highly we all think of him. He’s our captain and he always leads by example.”
