Exclusive: Joel Matip could miss the rest of the season due to serious groin injury - Liverpool

Liverpool defender Joel Matip could miss the rest of the season after picking up a groin injury against West Brom.

Matip out

The 29-year-old has struggled with fitness issues ever since his free transfer from Bundesliga side Schalke in 2016, missing a total of 60 games during that timeframe.

With the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out for significant amounts of time due to serious knee injuries, Matip could be set to join his defensive teammates as he is also facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Two different sources with knowledge of the situation have told us that Liverpool are extremely worried that they might have lost Matip for anywhere between three to six months after he picked up a groin injury during the Reds’ 1-1 draw with West Brom on Sunday evening.

Matip was forced off in the second half of the game and whilst the defender will need to take a scan to assess the full extent of the damage, there are major concerns that he has suffered a significant tear, which would see him sidelined for a significant period of time, possibly the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign. At this point, there is no official diagnosis, but the Reds are fearful that they’ve lost their third central defender to a major injury.

Transfer Tavern Verdict

This will be a devastating blow for Jurgen Klopp if Liverpool’s worries are confirmed as the German manager will have all of his established defenders missing if Matip is sidelined.

The defender has not only been resolute at the back but he is also a threat from set-pieces and was described as “dangerous” by BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks.

With reports suggesting that Liverpool did not have any plans of diving into the transfer market next month, this setback may urge the likes of Klopp, sporting director Michael Edwards and FSG to reconsider.

Games are coming thick and fast, with no let up to the intensity. The pressure on the likes of Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips will now be immense, and Liverpool must act to bring in fresh defensive faces.

In other news, Jamie Carragher sends clear message to Liverpool owner John Henry following West Brom stalemate.
