Liverpool: Adrian Durham lambastes Reds tactics during Southampton defeat

Liverpool have been criticised by talkSPORT Adrian Durham following their 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Monday night.
Durham not impressed
The Reds fell to their second defeat of the season at the hands of the Saints, who clinched the victory with a goal early on in the game, with former Anfield man Danny Ings netting inside the first five minutes.
Durham loathed what he saw during the dying embers of the affair, with Liverpool taking a short corner with their goalkeeper in the box looking to be the hero. After taking the corner, before they had the chance to create an attacking play by putting the ball into the box, the referee blew the full-time whistle to condemn Liverpool’s misery.
Speaking about the event, Durham told talkSPORT: “What are they doing? They passed it around, edge of the box, then the whistle went for full-time and they lost 1-0. What is the point?
“This is simple. Short corners are rubbish. They rarely work and the chance is missed to get the ball in the box.”
Durham’s rant continued. “The biggest crime, taking a short corner where three passes later, ends up with your keeper back in your box and what does he do? He launches it upfield.”
He then suggested the idea of having a ‘corner coach’ installed as a member of staff as part of his generalised point, referring to the fact that Liverpool have a throw-in coach in the form of Thomas Gronnemark.
Transfer Tavern Verdict
Durham is spot on. It seemed a bizarre decision for The Reds to play a short corner. Maybe they underestimated the amount of time that they had left.
Nevertheless, it ended up being just one of the many deciding factors that has seemingly handed the advantage in the title race to arch-rivals Manchester United, who have a game in hand on Liverpool,
Jurgen Klopp’s side are now without a win in three league games, a stat which would have been unheard of a season or two ago and perhaps that misjudgement at the end of the game was a sign that their thinking is a bit muddled at present.
In other news, Liverpool inflicted with transfer blow regarding their pursuit for ‘formidable’ defender.
