Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car was reportedly devastated after missing out on what would have been a dream move to Anfield.
The Reds wasted no time in bringing two fresh centre-backs on Deadline Day. Preston North End’s Ben Davies and Schalke’s Ozan Kabak were confirmed as Liverpool players before Monday’s 11 pm deadline.
Caleta-Car was a player that had been linked with a move to Liverpool by RMC, but the transfer did not materialise and the 24-year-old remains in Ligue 1.
Fresh information was revealed by the Daily Mail, which stated that the Croatia international was gutted to not get his move to the Premier League champions after Marseille blocked a transfer as they didn’t have time to find a replacement.
Once Liverpool had completed their business, it was then revealed that Joel Matip had been ruled out for the rest of the season due to an ankle ligament injury, which explained why they were so busy during Deadline Day.
Transfer Tavern Verdict
Due to the level that Liverpool have elevated themselves to over the past few seasons, it is understandable that a player would be disappointed not to get a move to Anfield.
That being said, Caleta-Car is still young and has a long career still ahead of him in the game and he has shone in France this season, averaging 3.5 long balls and 4.1 clearances (Whoscored).
Of course, Liverpool may not have drawn the line under any future transfer, as we’ve seen in the past with the likes of Virgil van Dijk that Jurgen Klopp has been happy to go back in for a player when an initial transfer collapses. Time will tell if the Reds make a second move for Caleta-Car in the summer.
