As per Calciomercato, there has been some exciting transfer news out of Liverpool involving Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez.

The Lowdown: Reds eye Firmino successor?

Some reporters have suggested that Liverpool already have a tailor-made heir in Diogo Jota, while other sources claim that the Reds and Fenway Sports Group are taking to the transfer market.

Making an exciting claim on the latter plan, Calciomercato have an update involving Inter marksman Martinez.

The Latest: Liverpool 'ready' to move for Martinez...

According to the Italian news source, as stated in their headline, Jurgen Klopp's side are 'ready to attack' for the Argentine.

They also claim that Liverpool have put the 'spotlight' on Martinez, coming after they thought about signing the forward in 2020 before completing the purchase of Jota instead.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Scoring 17 goals and setting up 10 others for Inter last season, his haul of 11 strikes and two assists this time round indicates that he is consistent in front of goal (Transfermarkt).

However, the £177,000-per-week star, who was called a 'beast' by his former Nerazzurri strike partner Romelu Lukaku, will cost around €95m (£75.1m) - arguably a huge price for FSG and Liverpool.

His quality is obvious, but given the presence of new signing Luis Diaz alongside Liverpool's array of attacking talent across the front three, perhaps a bigger priority should be tying down the likes of Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah to new deals, with all three only contracted to 2023.
