Liverpool could have the chance to make a January move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, according to reports.
Red alert for Upamecano
The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield for some time, with Manchester United also showing their interest in the centre-back.
Manager Jurgen Klopp is currently hunting for a resolution to his injury crisis. Both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, his first-choice centre-back pairing, have been ruled out due to long-term knee injuries.
This leaves Joel Matip as the club’s only established defender available for selection, with Fabinho who can also drop in from midfield.
According to SportBILD’s Christian Falk, Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich cannot afford Upamecano and a decision on his imminent future could be decided in just over six weeks time.
He added that the Frenchman has a release clause of €45m (£40.3m) which may tempt the Merseysiders into submitting a bid for his services, who was described as “formidable” by Red Devils icon Rio Ferdinand (cited by the Independent).
Transfer Tavern take
Liverpool desperately need to put a plan in place in order to keep their Premier League title defence alive. But with The Athletic reporting this week that Klopp is unlikely to sign a defender, this could cause concerns from segments of the Kop faithful.
Matip cannot be relied upon due to his fitness issues, which could leave the Reds without experience at the back, which is unfair to put pressure on young players.
Sporting director Michael Edwards is known for his magic tricks and pulling rabbits of the hat. Time will tell what he has in store during the next window and if Upamecano is indeed the man to join Klopp’s revolution.
