Liverpool and Manchester United could make offers for Leeds United and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The Lowdown: Phillips linked with Liverpool move

The 25-year-old has been a colossal performer for the Whites, helping them return to the Premier League and becoming England's reigning Player of the Year.

Phillips has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent times, as the Reds eye up midfield reinforcements ahead of next season.

While the Englishman's current Leeds contract doesn't run out until 2024, there is an increasing feeling that he could leave the club before then, as plenty of pundits have suggested it is only a matter of time before he joins a Champions League outfit.

The Latest: Journalist expects bid

Someone who thinks a move to either Liverpool or United could be on the cards is O'Rourke, who told Give Me Sport that bids from the pair are to be expected:

"Kalvin Phillips will definitely have offers for him. I think he is probably one of the best midfielders in Europe.

"The likes of Manchester United and Liverpool are both looking to strengthen in that area."

The Verdict: Fantastic summer addition

Liverpool's midfield may be littered with great quality, with Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago a superb trio, but new blood will be needed soon.

The latter pair are now in their 30s, James Milner is 35 and youngsters such as Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott are still maturing as players.

Liverpool could do with someone approaching their peak years and Phillips could be exactly that man, with his energy and quality perfectly suited to Jurgen Klopp's style of play. His average of 2.3 tackles per game in the Premier League this season is bettered only by Kostas Tsimikas (2.5) in Liverpool's squad.

Granted, he may not play every week because of the quality around him but he would be viewed as a potential long-term successor to the aforementioned trio.
