Liverpool centre-back Rhys Williams is rumoured to be joining Championship side Swansea City on loan on deadline day.

  • the deal has since been confirmed by the Swans.

The Lowdown: First-team chances slim

The 20-year-old did himself proud for the Reds last season, being thrown into the team by Jurgen Klopp, in order to ease their injury crisis at the back.

Although Williams made nine Premier League appearances in total, helping Liverpool finish third in the table, his first-team hopes look bleak currently.

There are at least four centre-back options ahead of him in the pecking order, so a loan move elsewhere may make sense.

The Latest: Williams could join Swansea

According to The Times' Paul Joyce on Twitter, Williams is on the verge of joining Swansea on loan, with the Welsh club 'interested' in acquiring his services.

It will allow the Englishman more regular starts, as he looks to kick on in his career.

The Verdict: Right move for youngster

This makes perfect sense for Williams, who is in danger of going backwards if he stays at Liverpool and doesn't play at all.

Instead of potentially heading back into the Reds' Under-23s side, the youngster should gain invaluable experience in what is a hugely competitive and physical league.

If Williams shines at Swansea, there is still no reason why he can't see a future for himself at Anfield, or at the very least secure an exciting permanent move elsewhere.
