Sky Sports: “phenomenal” manager eyes Liverpool job

Bournemouth v Manchester City - Premier League

Liverpool have endured a very difficult 12 months following their Premier League title win, and this summer will be pivotal for the club.

The Reds managed to secure Champions League football with a fifth-place finish in the Premier League on the final day of the season, but across all competitions they have struggled to consistently assert their dominance and quality in performances.

There have been numerous factors behind Liverpool’s inability to maintain their high standards this season, with Arne Slot’s influence heavily debated and criticised throughout the campaign.

The Dutch manager has gone from the incredible high of winning the league in his first season at Anfield to frustrating lows that have raised major concerns about his ability to lead the club out of its current slump.

As things stand, it has been widely reported that Slot will remain in charge next season, with Liverpool currently having no plans to search for a successor.

However, that has not stopped the conversation surrounding potential replacements from continuing, especially if he fails to oversee a significant turnaround during the opening weeks and months of the upcoming campaign.

There have been numerous candidates linked with the role over recent months, including Xabi Alonso, who recently became Chelsea manager.

Former AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola – once hailed as “phenomenal” by BBC Sports pundit Danny Murphy – has also been touted as a potential option, and fresh reports have now strengthened those claims as the Spaniard reportedly considers his next project.

According to Sky Sports News, AC Milan and Crystal Palace are unlikely to appoint Iraola as their next manager this summer.

It is claimed that the 43-year-old has reservations about joining the Serie A giants and, despite Palace’s recent Conference League triumph, a move to Selhurst Park also appears unlikely.

Instead, it is understood that Iraola would favour a move to either Liverpool or Bayer Leverkusen, although Liverpool currently have no intention of parting ways with Slot, while Leverkusen are reportedly already in talks with Felipe Luis.

Should Liverpool appoint Iraola?

It is becoming increasingly unlikely that Slot will lose his job this summer as preparations begin for the upcoming transfer window.

Having said that, there is a genuine possibility that the Dutchman’s ‘credit in the bank’ could quickly disappear next season if there are no visible improvements in performances, result and overall competitiveness.

The summer transfer window could ultimately define the future direction of Liverpool’s squad, particularly with the departures of Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson creating further uncertainty surrounding both quality and experience.

While Salah struggled at times to maintain his remarkably high standards in front of goal, he remained one of the key driving forces behind Liverpool’s success over the last decade.

Replacing his output and influence at his peak will be almost impossible, meaning Liverpool must find solutions that allow attacking responsibility to be shared more effectively across the forward line.

As for Iraola, his aggressive attacking philosophy and high-energy football at Bournemouth would undoubtedly appeal to supporters who became accustomed to the relentless intensity seen throughout Jurgen Klopp’s tenure at Anfield.

Whether that style can translate into the level of consistency and competitiveness Liverpool demand is another challenge entirely.

The pressure attached to managing one of the biggest clubs in world football is significantly greater, while the demands of competing across multiple competitions would present a far more complex test than anything Iraola has previously experienced with Bournemouth.

What Liverpool cannot afford now is another season of uncertainty and regression.

The club’s hierarchy must ensure that any decisions made this summer are focused on restoring stability and rebuilding a squad capable of competing for silverware once again.

After years of setting the standard both domestically and in Europe, simply qualifying for the Champions League will not satisfy expectations at Anfield for long.

The pressure to return Liverpool to the very top is already building, and next season could define the future of the Slot era.
