After winning the Champions League last season, Liverpool took a potentially risky decision over the course of summer 2019 to not make any big-name signings.

Indeed, prior to this season, the Telegraph reported of how Jurgen Klopp viewed the likes of Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rhian Brewster as ‘new signings’ after struggling with injury during the 2018-19 campaign and journalists such as Graham Ruthven wrote of how it could be a mistake not to delve into the transfer market.
Obviously, it’s easy to look back now and suggest that the Reds knew what they were doing all along but it’s fair to say the fact they didn’t rock the boat during the summer has worked out well. Eight points clear at the top of the Premier League and unbeaten domestically all season, the European champions look on course for a first league title in almost 30 years.
Still, one of the main issues with Klopp’s team amid all their success of late has been in midfield. Pundits such as Graeme Souness have lamented the lack of a creative player since the departure of Philippe Coutinho in 2018 and no Liverpool midfielder has made more than 2 assists this season (as per WhoScored).
So, Jack Grealish’s performance for Aston Villa against Newcastle United last night seemed to spark an interest amongst Kopites online. The England hopeful has four assists to his name already this season and averages 2.8 key passes per game so far, which is a lot more than Fabinho’s 1.1, the highest of all Reds midfielders.
Previously linked with a move to Anfield by the Birmingham Mail, Anfield legend Jamie Carragher recently compared him to some of the best players in the league on Sky Sports.
