Marouane Chamakh has reportedly held talks with Liverpool over a possible pre-contract agreement. The Daily Mail is reporting that the Bordeaux striker is a target for Liverpool as they seek to bolster their squad for next season.
The Moroccan is out of contract at the end of the season and according to FIFA regulations, he is now allowed to discuss terms with other clubs over a possible free transfer at the end of the season. The talks are still at a preliminary stage and though Liverpool are one of the first to register a official interest, the player will not make a decision hastily. He has attracted interest from all across Europe over the last 6 months and though a January move had been mooted, it now seems that he will stay in France until the end of the season. Bordeaux’s progress in the Champions League has given the player the incentive to finish the season with them, while the club will benefit more from having the player available in the knockout stages than they would from selling him for a nominal fee this month.
The likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and AC Milan are all said to have looked at the striker and now that it is clear he will be available for free in the summer, there will be no shortage of suitors. Liverpool cannot guarantee Champions League football next season and this puts them at a distinct disadvantage compared with many of their rivals; in addition money is tight at the club and other sides will be able to offer more attractive wage packages.
Liverpool have made their move early, but there is a long way to go before Chamakh’s future is sorted out.
