Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are gutted following the collapse of the one of the club’s biggest ever transfer deals.
With the summer transfer window officially open, Jurgen Klopp wasted no time in strengthening his squad following defeat in the Champions League final against Real Madrid. Out of the blue, Liverpool completed a £40m deal for Monaco midfielder Fabinho who will arrive on Merseyside on July 1st alongside RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita. Lyon captain, Nabil Fekir, was expected to be Jurgen Klopp’s latest recruit.
The French international’s move to Anfield seemed a formality after a fee was agreed with Lyon. However, the deal collapsed following a medical with Liverpool pulling out due to fears over his long-term fitness. For now, the transfer seems dead, with the Reds unlikely to rekindle their interest unless Lyon drastically reduces their asking price.
Klopp still wants to sign an attacking midfielder to replace Philippe Coutinho and will be seeking out alternative targets. The perfect signing could be Ajax midfielder – Hakim Ziyech. However, the Moroccan is reportedly on the verge of a move to Roma, so Liverpool should act quickly to hijack the deal. He is valued at £18m according to Transfermarkt.
Ziyech enjoyed a fantastic campaign in the Eredivisie, scoring nine goals and notching 17 assists. Primarily an attacking midfielder, he can also play in a deeper role as the number eight or on the left-wing; giving Klopp valuable cover in the wide areas. He is set for a starring role at the World Cup with Morocco.

The 25-year-old has been the top Eredivisie assist provider in the last three seasons, highlighting his ability to pick out a pass. With an attack of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah in front of him, those numbers should continue in the Premier League. With excellent long-shots and set pieces, a move for Ziyech makes perfect sense
Liverpool fans, thoughts?
