Liverpool: Virgil van Dijk could feature before end of the season

Liverpool may see Virgil van Dijk play in the famous red shirt again this season.

Van Dijk’s long-awaited return

This is according to Sunday World journalist Kevin Palmer, who revealed that there are ‘some hopes’ that the 29-year-old could be back in Jurgen Klopp’s side before the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Van Dijk has been out of the team since October after suffering cruciate ligament damage during his side’s 2-2 draw against Everton.

A couple of weeks ago, Netherlands coach Frank de Boer said that he expects the Reds centre-half to be back in time for their Euro 2020 opener on June 13th – depending on whether the tournament goes ahead.

The 6 foot 3 defender previously updated his progress back to full fitness in the gym and it will still be some time before he rejoins his teammates in full training.

Transfer Tavern Verdict

This will understandably get Liverpool fans excited, on the basis that it already seems an eternity since he last featured in the team and how catastrophic their injury crisis has been.

But it is crucial that Van Dijk isn’t rushed back. Doing so could have a detrimental effect on the rest of his career, which the Kirkby physios will need to monitor on a daily basis.

Nonetheless, it is at the very least encouraging for the club that he could be back on the pitch this campaign, and perhaps he could play a crucial role in the closing stages of a hotly contested Premier League title race.
