Southampton fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are desperate to see some incomings. The Saints are yet to really kick-start their summer business, with just Polish defender Jan Bednarek arriving from Lech Poznan so far.
Despite the lack of incomings, Saints fans are perhaps more anxious over who else may leave the south coast side. And they won’t be shocked to hear that it’s Liverpool who have come knocking.
Centre-back Virgil van Dijk is reportedly wanted by a number of clubs, including the Reds and Manchester United, while Jurgen Klopp’s side were also linked with playmaker Dusan Tadic last month.
Southampton though left Liverpool red-faced after complaining to the FA over an alleged tapping up of Van Dijk as the Merseysiders’ reputation in the transfer market continues to spiral.
A number of Saints players will be eager to be in Pellegrino’s plans, after failing to deliver at St Mary’s last season.
We’ve identified TWO players who need to make an impact on their new manger in pre-season…
Shane Long

The Irishman disappointed last season in the goalscoring market. Long netted just three times in 29 appearances last season.
The 30-year-old missed the closing weeks of the campaign with a broken metatarsal bone in his foot, but is now fit and ready to hit the ground running in pre-season.
Following the sacking of Claude Puel, it’s a fresh start for the Republic of Ireland international.
Maya Yoshida

With Southampton signing Polish defender Jan Bednarek, many are pointing to Maya Yoshida as the most likely to be benched.
Alongside Van Dijk, the Japan international is a dependable figure at the back. But the Saints intend to keep hold of Van Dijk and therefore Yoshida needs to impress his new manager in pre-season to maintain his starting role.
