Speaking to German media outlet Kicker, (via The Daily Mail) Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has backed Leroy Sane to succeed at the club, with our resident Citizens here in the Transfer Tavern hoping that comes to pass.
Both Gundogan and Sane were signed in the transfer window over the summer, but only the former has made significant appearances this season, with the former Schalke winger Sane limited to a substitute’s role.
At only 20-years-old, though, he has plenty of time to learn and improve and the former Dortmund midfielder Gundogan has no qualms over him doing just that.
He said: “It is only normal that Leroy is still finding his feet at Manchester City. I think Leroy has the character and personality to cope with this situation.
”He is confident and is well aware of his own qualities.”
So far this season Sane has seen the likes of Raheem Sterling, Jesus Navas and, another new signing, Nolito start ahead of him in his favoured wide role in Pep Guardiola’s side.
However, having worked with the talented youngster at international level, Gundogan seems to have little doubts about his compatriot.
The Citizens drew at home to Middlesbrough at the weekend and go into the international break in third place in the table.
