Manager’s transfer decision will frustrate Celtic fans with big deal scuppered

Celtic v Manchester City - UEFA Champions League Group Stage - Group C

While many of the Celtic fans in the Transfer Tavern were hoping for a busier window, the capture of Patrick Roberts has been huge for them.

Indeed, the 20-year-old is a hugely popular figure amongst the Bhoys in our bar after his wonderful campaign in green and white last term, making the fact he’ll be around for another year a delightful one.

So, reports from the Scottish Sun shedding more light on the deal have proven rather interesting.

They’ve revealed that Brendan Rodgers had agreed an £8m PERMANENT deal for the England U20 star, a transfer that’d have broken the Hoops’ transfer record. However, according to the report, Pep Guardiola changed his mind at the last minute.

The Spaniard is thought to have decided Roberts will remain his player for the next 12 months at the last minute, though there is reportedly a chance Celtic will revisit a permanent move next summer.

Though they’re glad Roberts is back, the idea of having signed him on a permanent deal is seen as a missed opportunity by our punters clad in green and white.

Landlord’s Verdict:

A truly wonderful talent, Roberts lining up for Celtic is huge for Rodgers. Still, it’s hard to blame Guardiola for not wanting to give up a player of such potential with ease, so it’ll be interesting to see if Roberts can improve in the Champions League this season.
