Former Watford manager Rob Edwards

Former Watford boss Rob Edwards has now emerged as the ‘favoured’ candidate for Middlesbrough head of football Kieran Scott, according to Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope.

The Lowdown: Carrick talks broke down

As per The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, after holding talks with Boro over their managerial position, Manchester United cult-hero Michael Carrick decided it was not the right time for him to return to football.

Carrick had been dubbed the favourite t0 take over, so the Teeside club now have to look elsewhere in a hurry, with caretaker Leo Percovich expected to prepare the team for Saturday’s home game against Blackburn Rovers.

The Latest: Hope’s news

Following the news of Carrick’s decision, Hope has now shared an update on the club’s managerial situation.

Taking to Twitter, the reliable journalist revealed footballing chief Scott is a big fan of Edwards:

“Boro manager search continues. Michael Carrick spoken to today but feeling he is not keen. Rob Edwards already spoken to & said to be favoured by head of football Kieran Scott. Lee Cattermole another I wouldn’t rule out.”

The Verdict: Edwards a good appointment?

Whilst Edwards’ tenure at Watford was short-lived, the 39-year-old, known for a somewhat unusual 3-4-1-2 system, did a phenomenal job with Forest Green Rovers, who he was manager of for a year.

The Welshman unexpectedly guided the Gloucestershire club to the 2021/22 League Two title after pipping Exeter City on goal difference.

Having already impressed whilst in charge of Wolves U21s and England U16s, Edwards’ pedigree had increased dramatically ahead of his appointment as Watford boss.

Hailed by then Wolves sporting director Kevin Thelwell as a ‘talented coach’, the former Hornets man could be an exciting gamble for Middlesbrough.
