Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have found some common ground today – mocking Harry Redknapp for one of the most bizarre shouts of the week.
Writing in his column for London Evening Standard, the former White Hart Lane gaffer has suggested Arsenal should move for Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney at the end of the season.
The England skipper is the Old Trafford outfit’s all-time record goalscorer but he’s had to settle for a bit-part role under Jose Mourinho this season, making more substitute appearances (9) than starts (8) in the Premier League.
The Independent believe Rooney will snub interest from China to stay in the Premier League and Redknapp holds a similar opinion – mooting the Emirates Stadium as a potential next destination.
He’s admitted such a move would represent a gamble on Arsene Wenger’s part, but also sees the 31-year-old as the ideal man to bring some leadership into Arsenal’s squad – something he accuses this current Gunners side of lacking.
He said; “Arsenal should take a gamble and sign Wayne Rooney on a two-year contract…Theo Walcott captained the team the other day. Kieran Gibbs did the same for half an hour against Bayern Munich last week when Laurent Koscielny got injured. Neither of them are true leaders.
“Say what you like about Wayne but his experience and will-to-win is up there with the very best. I saw a couple of Arsenal lads lose the ball and just stand there against Sutton. You need Wayne out there on the pitch getting straight into their faces reminding them what’s what.”
However, punters in the Tavern today aren’t exactly sold on the idea, whilst Twitter’s having an absolute field day at Redknapp’s expense…
I beg this to happen. Arsenal fan tv will be mint when both Ozil and Rooney start playing hide n seek in the same game. https://t.co/wVaDIMVJv4
