Rafa Benitez has been the man who should be credited with Newcastle’s upturn in form. The Magpies have won their last three Premier League games on the bounce despite failing to win in their first ten, but despite that, the fans weren’t happy with Rafa’s first substitution on the night as he withdrew Salomon Rondon in favour of Joselu.
71' – United make their first change of the game, with Joselu coming on for Rondón. 1-2. #NUFC

Rondon was The Geordies marquess signing over the summer, albeit he’s only on loan. The Venezuelan striker really burst onto the scene when he bagged two superb goals against Bournemouth in smashing fashion, drawing comparisons to the Newcastle United #9’s of old. However, he failed to bag against Burnley and was hooked by Benitez to bring Joselu onto the scene, who also failed to bag.
The Spanish striker has bagged two goals this season, with both of those coming in 2-1 losses against Tottenham and Chelsea in the early weeks of the season, but it looks pretty nailed on that Joselu won’t be the man to get bag loads of goals for the club. Throughout his career, he’s never been a 20+ goal a season striker and for that reason, the supporters were a little bit miffed when he was subbed on ahead of Rondon.

The Magpies were fuming at this Rafa change and will just be relieved that it didn’t cost them the game.
