Joe Bernstein from Mail Online has popped into the Football Transfer Tavern to tell Manchester United supporters that the club have no plans to offer unsettled striker Wayne Rooney a contract extension and want to assess his form before discussing it.
Rooney, who has been the subject of a failed bid from Arsenal and has interest from Chelsea, still has two-years remaining on his reported £250,000-a-week wages but he could be set for an early departure from Old Trafford.
Chief Executive Ed Woodward said: “There are no contract renewals that are being discussed. I am not sitting down with any player on an extension and there is no trigger date in the diary.
“Would we be afraid to run a contract down? Of course not.”
The England international has returned from United’s pre-season tour of Asia with a hamstring injury and he could have now played his last game in a United jersey with suitors lining up for a possible summer swoop.
New Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has repeated his admiration of the 26-year-old former Everton striker, saying: “He is a player I like very much but I can’t say much more. He is fast and direct and I like him. But he is a Manchester United player.”
