Harry Redknapp is reportedly looking to bring Argentinian prodigy, Juan Jose Vea Murguia, to White Hart Lane from South American giants, River Plate this summer. Ever keen for a bargain, ‘Arry is keen to recruit the attacking midfielder, who at just 17 is already being compared to Lionel Messi.
Vea Murguia has refused to sign a new contract with River Plate, where he came through the youth system, and it now seems his future lies outside his native Argentina. It has been reported in the Argentine press that Vea Murguia’s parents are keen for their son to come to England, with Spurs understood to be interested in bringing the dynamic attacker to White Hart Lane.
Such a move would be relatively novel, as most young Argentine prospects coming to Europe end up in Spain, due to the obvious advantages in being able speaking the same language in their new surroundings; two notable exceptions to this trend were Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez, who ended up at West Ham of all places.
The young Argentine has been offered deals by clubs in both Spain and Italy, but he is keen to move to the Premier League and is aware of Spurs’ interest. Vea Murguia is set to take part in the South American Under-17 Championship in Ecuador this month, after which he is to travel to England for talks with Harry Redknapp and Daniel Levy about a move to Tottenham.
It is hard to judge Murguia, who is still unknown to most in England; the youngster has apparently a big reputation in Argentina, and if, at 17, he could cope with the upheaval of a move to Europe, to a non-Spanish speaking country, then he would be in a good position for a positive career at Spurs. However, due to UK work permit restrictions, Vea Murguia, as a non-EU citizen, would have to apply for Spanish citizenship for this transfer to go through; this should, however, not be a problem given the midfielder’s Spanish family background.
