Another season has passed in the Scottish Premiership and Alfredo Morelos, true to form, has blighted his immense goal scoring tally with a disciplinary record that would surely put even some of the most hot-headed players to have graced the British Isles to shame.
So, running with the theme of two sides amid suggestions from the Daily Record that the former Helsinki marksman would consider a move away for Champions League football, it’s time to take a closer look at the Colombian’s campaign in one of the Transfer Tavern’s One high, One low pieces.
One high
If there’s one competition the Rangers faithful have truly relished challenging in this season, it’s the Europa League.
Although Steven Gerrard’s men only registered a solitary win throughout the entirety of the group stage, it was within this win – when Rangers decimated Rapid Vienna 3-1 in front of a raucous Ibrox crowd – that Morelos, fresh from his first suspension ruled the roost, scoring twice and setting up another.
Honestly, you’d probably struggle to find a game – at least at this stage in the season – that evoked such feelings of pride and ecstasy as the one against the Austrian giants. The game their manager described as his best in charge up until then, it was a point when fans could be forgiven that their team might actually channel the European spirit of their commander and chief, who famously upset the odds on “that” night in Istanbul. For that, Morelos was the centrepiece.
One Low
With five dismissals and 16 yellow cards this season, the Colombian’s record speaks for itself.
There were still eight games left when Rangers travelled to Parkhead late March with everything still to play for. Indeed, it could have been considered a pivotal moment of the season; the point in which we separated the men from the boys and the doers from the talkers.
After months of being given chance after chance and two already detrimental suspensions (and a rescinded one to boot), which saw the club drop four points, the Celtic contest was the player’s last chance for retribution.
But after 31 minutes of biting his tongue and behaving well, and when the game was perfectly poised for a Rangers upset, Morelos couldn’t help himself. He nibbled, and he nibbled hard.
In one swift elbow, Morelos essentially lost the game for the Light Blues, despite a somewhat spirited performance by some of his teammates.
