This season has been a massive thriving success for Celtic on the whole, but individually, the club’s stars haven’t had the joy that the club has had on the whole for the entire campaign. One of those who has certainly has had his ups and downs is Dedryck Boyata, and we’ll look at his best and worst here.
The Belgian defender waved goodbye to Glasgow and Celtic after the Scottish Cup final win against Hearts, even though he missed it through injury. He will now be leaving to sign for Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga and the Bhoys will definitely miss the experienced 28-year-old, who became known as one of the best defenders north of the border in his four-year stint in Scottish football.
ONE HIGH
For the Belgian defenders’ highlight of the season, we’re looking back a very very long way to last August. At this stage, no one knew that the Hoops would be going on and securing yet another domestic treble and there were fears that Dedryck Boyata would be leaving the club. In the leadup to the game, the defender declared himself ‘injured’ amidst a bid from Fulham, yet against Hamilton he starred.
The Bhoys erected a banner in protest against Boyata claiming he ‘was not fit to wear the shirt’, yet they were all forced to eat their words when he popped up with the only goal of the game in the 63rd minute. It was the moment where Boyata very quickly won back the supporters and very quickly saw his banner banished, and can easily be picked out as the now Hertha Berlin man’s best moment of the campaign.
ONE LOW
Given the class and guile that Boyata shows on the pitch, it can only be an off-field moment that makes the cut as the Belgian’s worst. We could easily double up and pick the banner that was previously mentioned, but that would be a bit of a con, wouldn’t it? For that reason, we’ve crunched the numbers and added up that Boyata has missed a whopping 23 (twenty-three) games with injury this season.
The entire second phase of the Scottish Premier League was missed by Boyata as a culmination of different muscle injuries and now a lingering knee problem has sidelined the Parkhead stopper for a lot of the season. With his fitness issues, the fact that Boyata is on the move may not be the worst thing in the world, although it has certainly hampered his final season with the Scottish giants
