Jake Farrell On Arse Targets
Despite the reservoir of good will built up by Arsenal fans toward Arsene Wegner another trophyless season which includes weak capitulations to their title rivals may be a stretch to far. With money in the bank and all of his transfer knowledge at hand they will be begging him to go out and sign the next Manu Petit or Patrick Viera. The astute purchase of Chamakh from Bordeaux is a start, but here are three players that I think could return The Gunners to the pinnacle of the domestic game.
Angel Di Maria
The left-footed Argentinian, who currently plys his trade with Benfica, caught the eye of the cream of European football with his displays last season. He will offer a departure from the intricate but ineffectual football often peddled by Arsenal with his direct running and rapier like left foot. It is easy to say that Gunners need a physical presence but then the only signing that would require was a Jan Koller-esque front man, something which may not quite fit in with Wegner’s footballing philosophy. Instead they need energy and a more incisive style of player. Di Maria would fit right in.
Luis Fabiano
If it is true that the Brazilian wants away from Sevilla then it would be foolish not to snap him up. Fabiano offers power, pace and most importantly goals. WIth him to partner Robin Van Persie and act as a striking focal point should the Dutchman get injured Arsenal’s squad will look far more impressive. The prospect of Cesc Fabregas, should he stay, finding the runs of some like the current Sevilla man will leave Arsenal fanss salivating.
Ashley Young
Ashley Young would provide the right sided savvy to balance a team and give Arsenal a strong midfield. With Fabregas partnered by a presence like Song or Diaby in the middle and the twin threats of Young and Chamak out wide Arsenal would look far more balanced. Young’s crossing is also second to none and he would happily land the ball at the feet or head of Arsenal’s front men in a way that they have struggled to do for so many seasons.
