Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are loving the unbeaten run in the Champions League this year and are hoping for another three points tonight.

The Blues could all but secure their passage into the knockout stages by going one better than last time and picking up another three points against Roma who, as our landlord remembers, they drew 3-3 with last time the teams played.

The Chelsea team have had a little wobble of late and the fixtures are coming thick and fast which is proving difficult for manager Antonio Conte to keep his players fresh and free from injury after a frustrating summer in the transfer market indeed.

One player who is looking to come back from his latest injury is Alvaro Morata. Our regulars in the Tavern say the Spanish striker has been in inspired form this season for the Blues and will want to pick up where he left off by finding the back of the net.

In his absence, Chelsea have struggled to find a suitable replacement with Michy Batshuayi looking like a player that could help change a game, rather than win one from the outright.

With that in mind, our punters have been having a chat over why Morata needs to have an outstanding game tonight…

Costa’s shadow

While Morata is an elegant forward, question marks still surround him. Nothing to do with his ability, though it’s a case of whether he can lead the line with the same snarling sense of mischief, to affect games even when he doesn’t score.

If he can provide a big Champions League performance, something Costa never really did during his three years in west London, Morata would go some way into stepping out of his compatriot’s shadow.

Early Season wobble

Chelsea fell out of the top four in the league in recent weeks after back-to-back defeats and winless in three in all competitions, the pressure seems to be showing on Conte and he’ll want to get a couple of decent results in the bag to steady the ship before it gets too rocky.

Morata will be looking at spearheading the attack and leading by example with a good performance and a goal or two, with the former Real Madrid man currently goalless in five games. Clearly a talent, he needs to get back into the grove.
