The Arsenal fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern always feel they are well overdue a marquee signing, and each year the pressure they put on manager Arsene Wenger to land one only grows. It seems now, however, that they’re asking for perhaps the biggest signing any club could wish for.
Reports on Friday revealed that Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave the Champions League winners, and Spain as a whole, having been accused of tax fraud in the country.
The numbers surrounding the 32-year-old’s time at Madrid are nothing short of staggering, having scored 406 goals in 394 games for the Galacticos, winning three Champions Leagues and three Balon d’Or titles.
While, of course, a deal for the Portuguese international would be an outstanding one for any club in world football, it would be particularly sweet for the Gunners, given the forward’s close ties to rivals Manchester United, who he left for Madrid in 2009.
Before anyone gets too excited though, as our landlord points out, to think that the Gunners could pull this off is outlandish to say the least.
That said, fans are allowed to dream and have taken to social media to beg Wenger to make a move for the Madrid man…
Ronaldo could be available.
Come on Wenger. Make us laugh out loud by making a bid for him.
