Liverpool have had a good season so far, and in January, things could get even better. According to the Express, the Reds want to land Kerem Demirbay, who currently plays for Hoffenheim.
He’s enjoyed a decent few years in Germany, and this term, he’s impressed with his brilliant technical ability and aggression in the midfield.
Given that Liverpool, at present, lack that creative flair in the middle of the park, the Reds could do with a player like the German, and Klopp is said to view him as a key target.
It’s a move that would certainly be exciting for Liverpool fans, and it’s also a move that could have far-reaching consequences for both the club and the players that are currently at Anfield.
With that said, here are some potential consequences of Liverpool move for Demirbay…
Quiet January
The reality is that if the Reeds land a player like Demirbay, that’s likely to leave little room for much of anything else in the transfer budget.
Liverpool have spent big over the last few years, and that’s served them well, but at some point, that’s going to have to stop.
Add to that the fact that the Express describes Liverpool’s plans to secure just ‘one’ key deal in the new year, and quickly, it begins to look like Demirbay is likely to be perhaps the only key target that the Reds have in January.
Bad News for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain enjoyed a brilliant season last year, and long-term, there’s no denying that he has a future at Anfield.
However, it’s hard to see a move for Demirbay ever having a positive impact on the Ox.
They share a position in the midfield, and both place an emphasis on quality on the ball, offensive flair and technical quality. Not to mention, both have a decent physical presence, meaning that they’ll be tasked with moving the ball forward in the midfield.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, realistically, isn’t going to be back to his best next season, and he’ll likely view next season as the ideal time for him to make an impact.
By that point, though Demirbay could have over 6 months in the first team under his belt; and the Ox may struggle to get a look-in thereafter.
Creative Flair
That said, it’s not all bad.
Demirbay wouldn’t be a Liverpool target if he wasn’t talented, and he’s most certainly a player with bags of ability.
With fantastic energy, a good range of passing and solid technical skill, the midfielder, in many ways, is exactly the sort of player that the Reds need in the heart of the midfield.
He’ll look to control the game and add some quality to the first team, and that has been lacking through the middle of the pitch as of late.
Perhaps his creativity would help to take some of the onus off of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah going forward.
