Chelsea: Fans call for Lampard to be sacked

Frank Lampard has endured an inconsistent start to life in the Chelsea hot seat.

The Blues kicked off their campaign with a disastrous trip to Manchester United, thumped 4-0 by the Red Devils in convincing fashion last month.

A hard-fought battle against Liverpool in the final of the UEFA Super Cup proceeded that trip to Old Trafford, which also ended in heartbreak as the west Londoners were beaten on penalties by Jurgen Klopp’s current league leaders.

Since then, wins against Norwich City and Wolves have been partnered by draws against Leicester City and Sheffield United. Eight points from a potential 12 in those four matches is not a bad return for a manager still getting to grips with life as a manager of a brand new team, who themselves are still gelling with one and other.

If you look at the opposition, though, you could argue that the club should be doing a little better, especially in the case of Sheffield United, who should have never been allowed a route back into the game with Chelsea leading 2-0 at half-time at Stamford Bridge.

Sunday’s narrow defeat against Liverpool – which saw the Blues have a goal chalked off thanks to VAR – was a close-knit game that saw Chelsea edge their opponents in the possession and shooting stats, but ultimately lose the match to an experienced Liverpool side determined to keep up their 100% winning start. That is exactly what they did, despite N’Golo Kante’s stunning consolation goal deep in the second-half.
