In this instalment of our Transfer Roundup, Football Transfer Tavern have gathered three of the biggest stories to have involved Chelsea recently and have provided our thoughts on the reports published.
Does Christian Pulisic deserve more minutes at Chelsea?
Barcelona interest in Willian
Willian continues to draw interest from Europe’s best as his contract continues to run down at Chelsea.
According to Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), the Catalan giants are thought to be keen on the 31-year-old, who will be available on a free next summer.
Barca’s interest follows Juventus previously eyeing up a deal on the cheap for the Brazilian, who is yet to receive a contract offer from the club.
Another week, another club. Willian seems to be in demand, and with his services reportedly taking the fancy of some big European sides, perhaps Chelsea could be tempted to cash in before he is able to leave on a free come the summer.
His return so far this term may suggest they may well be better off in grabbing a fee for £31.5m-rated Willian – though his first goal of the season against Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend could serve as a reminder of what he can still offer the Blues.
Wigan wonderkid in Lampard’s sights
Chelsea are reportedly leading the race to sign Wigan Athletic youngster Joe Gelhardt, according to the Daily Express.
The 17-year-old has already made three appearances for the Wigan senior side this season, notching his first goal against Hull City a fortnight ago.
While the Blues face competition from Everton for his services, the Daily Express suggests that Lampard is eyeing a summer swoop following the completion of Chelsea’s transfer ban.
Should the Blues boss continue the current trend of youngsters being given chances at Stamford Bridge, Gelhardt could well fit the bill, but with a potential move reportedly still months away, perhaps this particular story can go on the back-burner for now.
Chelsea among potential Tonali suitors
Reports in Italy (Il Mattino via CalcioMercato) over the weekend have named Chelsea as one of a selection of clubs to be interested in signing Brescia youngster Sandro Tonali.
The 19-year-old is thought to have gained interest at both Manchester clubs as well as other top-flight teams in his homeland, along with the likes of Monaco and Borussia Dortmund.
Tonali has contributed a couple of assists so far this season in Serie A, including against Napoli last weekend.
Whether Frank Lampard will deem Chelsea’s squad to require added firepower in defensive midfield amid a plethora of central options at present remains to be seen, though the reports suggest they are keeping tabs on Tonali just in case.
Rated at £22.5m by TransferMarkt, he may not come cheap, but after a forcibly quiet season on the transfer front, Chelsea may have the financial muscle to take a chance on the teenager come the summer.
