According to The Mail Online, Liverpool are facing an anxious wait for the results of Dejan Lovren’s scan, after the Croatian picked up an injury in their FA Cup loss to Wolves.
Liverpool’s perennial problem over the past decade has been their defence, or lack of for that matter. They thought that they had remedied that problem with the arrival of Virgil van Dijk last January, and to be fair, they have been a transformed side since then, only conceding 10 goals in the Premier League this season.
However, this injury to Lovren has unearthed some demons at Anfield that Jürgen Klopp thought that he had exorcised. With Joel Matip and Joe Gomez already injured, Liverpool suddenly look very thin on the ground, and are starting to look like the Liverpool of old.
Of course, to lose three-centre backs is just plain unlucky, but it does start to show that their defence is not as imperious as first thought. For example, with the departure of Nathaniel Clyne, they don’t really have back up in the right-back position behind Trent Alexander-Arnold. Equally, not many fans would trust Alberto Moreno behind Andy Robertson.
With midfielder Fabinho looking like he will partner van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool’s defence this weekend, this could be the period where Liverpool become exposed in their title race. This could also see the Dutchman pushed like he has not been this season, as he will need to partner a player that is not even a comfortable centre-back.
