BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has urged Manchester United to explore the possibility of signing Jack Grealish from Aston Villa following the midfielder’s performance at Old Trafford this weekend.
As a result, Crooks believes he would be a fine addition to the Red Devils’ midfield.
He said: “The Aston Villa captain scored a wonderful goal, had a fabulous game at Old Trafford and is precisely the sort of player United need to bolster their prospects. United fans are having to watch too many ordinary players while they are being asked to pay Champions League prices.”
It is clear that United’s prospects look bleak as far as the league is concerned this season, as they continue to loiter well outside of the Champions League places – and are in fact closer to the relegation zone than the top four in terms of points.
Crooks’ inclusion of Grealish is no surprise given his start to the season as well as his display at the weekend, with only Matt Targett gaining a higher rating (8.17/10) than him from WhoScored (7.24).
United’s current midfield options may present Grealish with a route into the United first team, with existing attacking midfielders Juan Mata and Andreas Pereira scoring just a single goal between them in all competitions so far this season.
And with rumours persisting over the future of Paul Pogba, Grealish may yet find himself a shoo-in to be on a future United teamsheet – particularly if clubs are willing to pay the kind of money United were reportedly asking for the Frenchman in the summer.
Though what is certain seems to be the quality of Grealish’s performances since Villa’s promotion to the Premier League – but whether United will act upon his showings this season remains to be seen.
