A few weeks ago, most Arsenal fans were confident that the team would be able to finish in a top-four spot and be well on their way back to Europe’s elite competition. Fast-forward to now, and things couldn’t be any more different.
Hopes of a top-four finish are all but gone after a 1-1 draw with Brighton essentially doomed Arsenal to a Europa League finish in the Premier League, and barring a miracle, Unai Emery’s first season in north London is looking to be a failure.
Things look grim for the Gunners, but there is a glimmer of hope that things might not be too bad in the future. As well as there still being a chance of qualifying for the Champions League via the Europa League, Arsenal have been linked with a striker who could add to their already exciting pool of talent.
According to L’Equipe via Four Four Two, the Gunners are interested in Lyon striker Moussa Dembele, who is thriving in Ligue 1 since joining the league from Celtic last summer.
Arsenal could do with more firepower up-front and a striker who has the potential to succeed those already at the club, so what are the potential consequences of Dembele joining the Gunners?
Gunners secure Lacazette replacement
With recent rumours (as per the Express) that newly named Arsenal Player of the Season Alexandre Lacazette is a target for Barcelona, it will come as no surprise that a move for Dembele would only happen should his fellow countryman make the move to the La Liga champions.
Lacazette is without a doubt Arsenal’s most important player, but in Dembele, the club would have a replacement that will not only replace his goals in the short-term but in the long-term can grow into the role the 27-year-old striker had at the Gunners that made him so indispensable.
Kroenke invests in the team
Of course, Arsenal could go in for Dembele with Lacazette still at the club, but with Manchester United looking to offer £43 million for the Lyon striker (as per the same L’Equipe report), it will be hard for the north London side to match that bid without some help from owner Stan Kroenke.
The infamous owner who sits in the shadows at Arsenal has shown in the past with his other sporting franchises that he has the money to invest into these teams, and after the season the Gunners have had it might show the American businessman that the club are in need of some of his finances to really progress as a team and make the signings that will get the north London side back to the top.
