Speaking to Football Insider, pundit Noel Whelan has hinted that Spurs star Son Heung-min has gone unnoticed under Jose Mourinho and is the Lilywhites’ ‘unsung hero’ out wide – waxing lyrical over the ‘exceptional talent’ ahead of Burnley.
Is Heung-min Son an 'unsung hero' at Spurs?
100%, doesn't get enough praise
No, people are taking notice
Son, who has starred alongside striker Harry Kane so far this season, with the duo forming a deadly partnership, is now being awarded with a new deal for his performances.
Son the saviour
Beforehand, the South Korea international was earning nowhere near the likes of Kane, Tanguy Ndombele and Gareth Bale, but another report from Football Insider claims he could be handed as much as £200,000-per-week including performance-related bonuses.
The 28-year-old has been a mainstay under Mourinho whilst propelling his side to new heights, as displayed during Spurs’ incredible 6-1 win at Old Trafford earlier this month.
Son bagged a brace in the historic victory alongside Kane, with the attacker now set to be rewarded for his efforts, and Whelan claims he is still an unnoticed hero for Tottenham.
Whelan waxes lyrical
“He’s been one of their standout performers for the past three or four years. He deserves it, no doubt about that, he’s an exceptional talent,” he said to Football Insider.
“He’s one player that always brings that consistency to Tottenham with his level of performances, not only assists but goals as well – he’s one of their star players at the club.
“We talk about Dele Alli, he’s probably on more money than Son. Does he deserve it? Not really when you think about the consistency Son has put in wearing a Tottenham shirt and the level of performances.
“He’s got everything you would want from a wide man – energy, tricks, skill, vision, weight of pass, a threat in the box, he can do things by himself. He’s kind of a little bit unsung there, an unsung hero.
“He brings so much to Tottenham and to Harry Kane, he relieves the pressure, he’s a threat and everything seems to go through Son and Kane.”
Transfer Tavern take
Given his showings for Spurs recently, Whelan could be correct in his verdict that Son deserves a new deal, though it may be a bit of a stretch to call the lethal winger ‘unsung’ – Spurs fans absolutely adore ‘Sonny’ and long may it continue.
