Writing for Football.London, Alasdair Gold has detailed a potential concern over Tottenham’s midfield enforcer Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for Jose Mourinho – namely what the team will do when he becomes unavailable.
Hojbjerg, who signed for Spurs in the summer, becoming their first marquee acquisition of the window for a bargain £15m, has been thriving under Mourinho, as pointed out by Gold.
Gold reveals Hojbjerg concern
The Portuguese even joked about him and the squad members calling the Danish midfielder ‘Zidane‘ after Tottenham’s 3-0 victory over LASK on Thursday, with the Lilywhites now set to take on Burnley on Monday in an effort to get back on the winning trail domestically.
Spurs capitulated in a surprising 3-3 draw against West Ham last weekend, even after taking a 3-0 lead at half-time, with the Hammers scoring a trio of late goals to shock Mourinho’s men.
After Hojbjerg’s stellar Europa League performance, Gold has hinted that Spurs could be in trouble if the Dane becomes unavailable at some point this season. Indeed, the journalist claims that Spurs are lacking a natural replacement in defensive midfield, with the best candidate, Oliver Skipp, currently on loan at Norwich.
Consequently, Mourinho could be heavily reliant on Hojbjerg to protect the back four in an effort to avoid any future mishaps like that of the West Ham draw.
Transfer Tavern take
The 25-year-old would certainly be a miss for Spurs whenever absent, with only Eric Dier or Moussa Sissoko as potential replacements in that defensive midfield role.
Whether or not the Lilywhites will have to contend without Hojbjerg remains to be seen, but it’s hard to argue with Gold that such a scenario would present Mourinho with a huge selection headache.
